Depeche Mode's frontman has spent his entire career singing bandmate Martin Gore's songs, which might explain why the lead single from Gahan's second solo album, penned without Gore's assistance, still sounds almost exactly like a Depeche Mode song. ''Kingdom'' once again explores the familiar contrast between cold, nasty industrial squelches and Gahan's exquisitely velvety pop vocals instead of breaking any new ground. And so what? Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan has just finished recording his second solo album 'Hourglass', which is due to be released in the UK on October 22 and a day later in the US.

NME.COM caught up with Gahan in his adopted home city of New York to discuss the album and what it's like for a rock star to confront his own mortality.

"My little studio is on one of the busiest streets in the city so you get the flavour of New York all day and all night long," Gahan told NME.COM.

"On the track called 'Endless', you can hear the street in the background. At one point you'll hear the 'woop' of a cop car. But we just left it.

" Gahan co-produced 'Hourglass' with Depeche Mode's touring drummer and Christian EignerAndrew Phillpott, the band's programmer.

"We decided to produce it ourselves, which was a lot more work than we thought," he admitted. "But it turned out to be a great learning experience.

" They finished the recording process in a speedy eight weeks, which Gahan said was the "perfect" amount of time. "It had a fresh energy that was not bogged down with production. It was just 'This is what it is'.

" Throughout 'Hourglass', Gahan addresses themes of mortality, getting older and the passage of time. "Those are things that definitely kick my ass on a daily basis," Gahan said.

"Something about living in New York pushes the clock as well. Once the city's awake it never really sleeps. But I wanted to slow down and accept that that's where I'm at. Time is looming for me. But it's OK. I don't wanna waste anymore time sitting around thinking about it. I wanna be out there doing things that are creative".

Gahan revealed that a solo tour might be in the cards, depending on listeners' reactions to the new album. "We'll wait to see what happens and see if people really embrace the record," he said.

"Gahan Digs 'Deeper' On Second Solo Album"

Depeche Mode's David Gahan isn't exactly known for working quickly. After all, fans have come to expect a traditional four-year wait between the band's studio albums, and Gahan waited more than 20 years to release his first solo project, 2003's "Paper Monsters."

But within a few months of completing Depeche Mode's Playing the Angel tour, he was writing new material with the band's touring drummer Christian Eigner and programmer Andrew Phillpott, and it's this music which makes up "Hourglass," due Oct. 23 via Mute/Virgin.
"When we started, they had a few musical ideas, but nothing song-like in any way, shape or form," he tells Billboard.com. "We really wrote as we went along. After two weeks, we looked around and realized we weren't just demoing, so we thought, Why don't we just make a record? For me, that was the really exciting thing. There was no involvement from the record company, or worrying about who would produce it or where we'd record it".

Lyrically, Gahan pushed himself to write about his own struggles. "I'm becoming more accepting of the fact that I'm getting a little older," he says with a laugh. "It always seems to be a theme in my life that I'm racing against time. I'm a 25-year-old in a 45-year-old man's body. I wrote about those themes more, like, this is who I am and these are these are my frustrations. There's still these other parts of me that rear their ugly head ... my struggle with being with myself."

In terms of the music, the goal was to be as spontaneous as possible. Gahan points to the song "Deeper and Deeper" as a prime example. "It was a one-riff idea we decided to go with fundamentally from the groove," he says. "We improvised on that one idea and exaggerated it as the song went along. We just kept going and layering it."

"With the use of electronics and technology, you can quickly produce something very different by twisting it around," he continues. "It's a lot more difficult to do that when you sit down with a traditional band. You can change arrangements, but to create an atmosphere, using technology is a great help.

" Gahan isn't planning to tour solo at the moment, although he says he "won't rule it out." There's also not much percolating in the Depeche Mode camp at the moment, but Gahan says bandmate Martin Gore is "working on some ideas. Loosely, we're planning on at least talking about doing another record next year."

"Concierto de REM en DVD y CD"

El 15 de octubre la banda de Michael Stipe, lanzará su primer disco en vivo titulado ‘R.E.M Live’ en formato doble. Este material contiene el concierto que los músicos realizaron en pasado 27 de febrero en Dublin y también estará disponible en DVD.

El show tiene una duración de una hora y 45 minutos, y son 22 canciones. Entre estas están: ‘The One I Love’, ‘Leaving New York’, ‘Losing My Religion’, ‘Man on the Moon’, ‘Bad Day’, entre otras.

"Travis y Bjork vienen a Chile"

Bjork se presentará por segunda vez en nuestro país el 10 de noviembre en el Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo. La cantante vendrá a presentar su último disco Volta editado este 2007.

A pesar que en el sitio web de la islandesa (www.bjork.com) no figura Chile dentro de su tour, la productora DG Medios ya confirmó su concierto. Bjork comenzará su gira latinoamericana el 26 de octubre en Brasil -con tres fechas-, luego estará en Argentina el 4 y 7 de noviembre y finalizará el 10 en Chile.

Por otro lado, y dentro del marco del Festival organizado por la productora Fénix, se presentarán los escoceses Travis como uno de los platos fuertes, junto a The Killers y Starsailor. Este evento será el 4 de noviembre en el Arena Santiago y comenzará a las 13.00 hrs. Además de la música habrán otras actividades artísticas.

Travis tocará en el escenario central y habrá otros en el exterior del recinto en los que tocarán bandas chilenas.

"Blur (Nuevo Disco)"

Las últimas novedades que se saben de los ingleses Blur, es que en octubre volverán a los estudios de grabación para preparar su nuevo disco. Éste contaría con la participación del guitarrista Graham Coxon, quien se había retirado del grupo en el 2002.

Aún no hay fecha de publicación para la placa sucesora a ‘Think Tank’.

Mientras tanto, ya está confirmada la salida del compilado de rarezas de la banda virtual de Albarn, Gorillaz.

"Coldplay Prepara Album Corto y Conciso”

A través de su sitio oficial, Coldplay anunció los títulos de ocho de las nueve canciones que compondrán su nuevo álbum. Se trata de un "disco corto y conciso, libre de añadidos y con al menos dos tandas más de canciones que serán lanzadas independientemente", según afirmaron los miembros del cuarteto británico. El listado de canciones incluiría “Lost!”, “Cemeteries Of London”, “Violet Hill”, “Poppy Fields”, “42”, “Yes!”, “Rainy Day” y “Leftrightleftrightleft”.

Estas revelaciones se unen al sonido latino que invadirá el elepé según explicó la banda liderada por Chris Martin hace unos meses al confirmar la clara influencia de su gira por Latinoamérica y varios días de grabación en Barcelona. Todo ello mezclado con la labor en la producción de los reputados Brian Eno y Timbaland.

"Anita Tijoux"

Anita Tijoux, a quien conocimos al frente de Makiza, ahora se lanza en plan solista y desata el KAOS. Ese es el nombre de su primer trabajo en solitario, que estará presentando en un tremendo show el viernes 7 de septiembre en el Centro de Eventos Bellavista (Galpón 6 de Chucre Manzur).

El lanzamiento de lo nuevo de Anita estará acompañado de grandes invitados, así que la fiesta está más que garantizada.... “Despabílate”

"Muérdete la Lengua"

Las mujeres están liderando la escena musical, la mayoría son jóvenes y con un sonido fresco. Francisca Valenzuela es una de ellas, quien nos presenta una verdadera declaración de principios en su debut discográfico ‘Muérdete la Lengua’ (2007), el cual contiene letras directas y pop con actitud.

Valenzuela tiene 20 años, vivió hasta los 11 en Estados Unidos, en donde escribió dos libros -“Defenseless Waters” y “Abejorros/Madurar”- y actualmente estudia Periodismo.

El primer tema que escuchamos de esta chilena fue ‘Peces’, lo escribió a los 13 años, aquí habla de una mujer despechada y éste la hizo acreedora – a pesar de no tener ningún LP en el mercado - de ser la nueva promesa de la escena nacional. Bajo este alero y la impaciencia de su admiradores, Francisca demoró prácticamente 1 año en editar su debut, ahora fichada por el sello La Oreja y con una nueva canción, ‘Dulce’.

El disco incluye 10 tracks más uno escondido en inglés. El piano es el instrumento principal para Valenzuela, aunque en el tema 'Muérdete la Lengua' es dejado a un lado para concentrarse en las guitarras, y junto con ‘Muleta’ no estarían mal para próximo single.

Gracias a sus letras la cantante se ha convertido en el nuevo himno para las mujeres modernas. Un claro ejemplo es ‘Dulce’, canción que critica a las chicas calificadas con aquel título: ‘Mujer por qué no ocupas tu voz de otra forma, utilizando algo más que las piernas, yo sé que hay algo en ti…’

Francisca Valenzuela ha sido comparada con Julieta Venegas y Fiona Apple, un paralelo con el que ella se enorgullece, reconoce que son sus principales influencias, pero basta verla en vivo para notar las diferencias. Tiene una actitud más provocadora que la primera, pero más ingenua que la segunda.

"Bee Gees Celebra 30 años de Fiebre de Sabado por la Noche con Reedición de Grandes Exitos"

Después de casi una década de estar descatalogada, la banda sonora de la película Fiebre de Sábado por la Noche vuelve a las tiendas, dentro de un compilado de grandes éxitos del trío Bee Gees. Temas como Night fever, Stayin’ alive, Tragedy, How deep is your love o You should be dancing son algunos de los veinte temas recogidos en el recopilatorio que será lanzado el próximo 25 de septiembre. Además de sus antiguos “números uno”, este nuevo disco recogerá varias novedades, como un tema inédito, llamado Warm ride, o una versión extendida de Stayin alive con cuatro remezclas.

El fenómeno no se detiene allí: Paramount, la propietaria de los derechos de Fiebre del sábado noche, reeditará la película en una edición especial de dos DVD’s en la que se incluyen numerosos extras. El film, el más taquillero de la historia en su momento, causó una revolución en la onda disco y su banda sonora se convirtió, hasta la llegada del Thriller de Michael Jackson, en la más vendida de todos los tiempos.

"Paul McCartney y Noel Gallagher Serán DJ de Radio"

Entre el 17 y 28 de septiembre la BBC celebrará sus 40 años de vida y ya confirmó a una legión de DJ’s de lujo: Paul McCartney, Noel Gallagher, Artic Monkeys, Ozzy Osbourne, Debbie Harry, Gwen Stefani, Paul Weller, Dave Grohl y Fatboy Slim. Todo ellos forman parte de un programa especial que emitirá la cadena inglesa, Radio 1 legends. En él los invitados serán los propios conductores del show en el que podrán poner todos los discos que han marcado su carrera o aquellos últimos que más les han fascinado.

McCartney, honrado por la invitación, declaró: "Voy como leyenda de mi propia calle. Han sido muy amables en pensar en mí e invitarme a hacer mi propio programa para hablar de la gente que me inspiró y poner mis discos preferidos".
